CFA 101

Chartered Financial Analyst® ("CFA") is a globally-recognized investment management designation. According to the CFA institute, the CFA program provides a strong foundation of investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills. Obtaining the CFA designation requires i) passing three exams (level I, II, and III exams) and ii) four years of relevant working experience.

Examinations

Level I curriculum coverage: focuses on a basic knowledge of the ten topic areas and simple analysis using investment tools. Ten topic areas include ethical & professional standards, quantitative methods, economics, corporate finance, equity investments, fixed income, alternative investments, portfolio management, etc.

Format: 2 exams in 1 day, 3 hours time for each exams (9am - 12noon, 2pm - 5pm), 60 multiple choice questions for each exam.

Level II curriculum coverage: a more in-depth and difficult version of Level I, emphasizing on the application of investment tools and the valuation technique of all types of assets.

Format: same as Level I

Level III curriculum coverage: applying all of the knowledge acquired (valuation, quantitative method, accounting, asset classes, etc.) for effective portfolio management and wealth planning.

Format: 2 exams in a day, 3 hours time for each exam (9am - 12noon, 2pm - 5pm). Exam in the morning consist of 8 - 12 essay questions; exam in the afternoon consists of 60 multiple choice questions.

Each exam offered annually (twice for level I in June and December; once for level II and III in June).
